Nicaragua to Issue New Banknotes Oct. 26

The Central Bank of Nicaragua (Banco Central de Nicaragua) has announced that as of October 26, 2015, new banknotes will circulate in denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 córdobas, in order to meet the demand for cash in circulation over the 2015-2017 period, replenish notes removed from circulation due to deterioration and incorporate the latest advances in anti-counterfeiting technology and practice.

The new banknotes feature innovative designs with images related to buildings, landscapes and traditions that promote the identity, culture and beauty of Nicaragua. The 500-córdoba denomination will be printed on a cotton paper substrate, while the 10-, 20-, 50-, 100- and 200-córdoba notes will be printed on a polymer substrate.

Bills currently in circulation shall retain their value, and will be replaced gradually as they deteriorate.

As of the time of publication, one Nicaraguan córdoba (NIO, or C$1) trades for approximately $0.036 USD.
