Top price for an empire coin: A gold coin with the portrait of emperor Ferdinand II was sold at the coin auction at the Rapp auction house in Wil, Switzerland, for 109,800 Swiss francs*. On the first day of the auction, coins, medals and banknotes were sold. Sales totaled 1.75 million Swiss francs*.
The auction will continue until 20 May with sales of rare stamps worth millions of Swiss francs.

Collectors and investors were keen buyers. Especially the coin from 1631 with the portrait of emperor Ferdinand II was surprisingly sold at a price three times higher than expected. The impressive sales price of 109,800 Swiss francs* for this gorgeously obtained 10-ducat gold coin from the Holy Roman Empire clearly shows that coins currently are in very high demand as collective consignment as well as investments.
“Goldvreneli” Worth More than Gold
The Swiss “100-Goldvreneli” (100 Swiss francs in gold), a particularly rare piece from 1925, also sparked exciting bidding battles: It was sold for 17’080 Swiss francs*. Furthermore a collection of the finest thalers of the Holy Roman Empire from the German Nation, which was divided into eight lots, outperformed the starting price fivefold: The owner put great emphasis on the quality of the coins, a decision that is now paying off with a selling price of 53,192 Swiss francs*.

Run on Alternative Real Assets
Rapp managing director Marianne Rapp Ohmann said on the first auction day collectors and investors were looking for new opportunities for lucrative investments. It was therefore not surprising that the prices at the Rapp coin auction often were very high.
“The auction sales with a total value of 1.75 Million Swiss francs were significantly higher than expected,” she said. “Alternative tangible assets that are a source of amusement and transportable at the same time are extremely popular.”
Philatelic Highlights Still to Come
On Thursday, 19 May and Friday, 20 May auctioneer Peter Rapp will auction rare stamps. Right on top of the list of these selected single items is a Basle Dove on cover with an estimate between 50’000 and 80’000 Swiss francs and one exemplar of the most expensive Austrian stamp, a “Zinnober Merkur“. With it, complete collections such as a collection of the British colonies in two wonderfully mounted Schaubek albums.
