Macedonia 2016 200 Denar

Front

The design on the front of the 200 denar banknote is representative of Christian terracotta icon or relief depictions of the Old Testament warriors Joshua and Caleb, the original of which dates to the sixth or seventh century and belongs to a famous group of terracotta icons found in the city of Vinica. The group is known as one of the most important archaeological discoveries in the Republic of Macedonia.

Description of the Icon

The figure of Joshua is in a frontal position. He is dressed in military clothes, wearing a helmet adorned with two horns. In his right hand holding a spear. The Sun is located in the central part of the upper half of the plate. Between Joshua’s helmet and spear is a star. The right half of the plate features the figure of Caleb, also in a frontal position. Like Joshua, he wears a military outfit and holds a spear in his left hand. With his right hand he holds a shield placed between him and the figure of Joshua. Caleb is turned slightly to the right, and his gaze is fixed on the sun showing Joshua. On his head is a representation of the moon.

Along the left vertical edge of the plate, to the left of Joshua, is written FILIUS NAVE upside down. In the upper middle portion of the relief, between the head of Joshua and the Sun, Joshua’s name is inscribed in three rows. Intertwined in the first row is the symbol of the cross. Along the right vertical edge of the plate is inscribed the name KALEEB.

Meaning of the Scene

This scene, depicting images of the soldier-heroes Joshua and Caleb, illustrates an episode from the Old Testament Book of Joshua, showing the moment when he stops the Sun over Gibeon and the moon over the valley Elonska before the great victory of the Israelites over the Amorites (Joshua 10: 12,13).

Heroic events in the story of Joshua prefigure some events of the New Testament. Starting from the period of life of the apostle Paul, the character of Joshua is treated as an Old Testament prefiguration of Jesus.

On the same side in the left field there is a representation of an early medieval bronze fibula, or pin, found near Prilep. The pin itself dates to around the beginning of the seventh century.

Reverse

The back of the 200 denar note is an architectural design element of the front facade of the Painted (Aladza) Mosque in Tetovo, one of the most attractive monuments of architecture and art from the Ottoman period. It is believed to have been built in the 15th century. The motif is complemented by floral elements taken from the decoration of marble floor tiles of the famous Isaac Mosque in Bitola, built at the beginning of the 16th century.
