Stack’s Bowers Galleries is pleased to announce the firm’s collaboration with Numismatica Ars Classica in offering the George W. La Borde Collection of Roman Aurei – Part I, to be sold the 23rd of May, 2016 in Zurich, Switzerland.
This meticulously curated cabinet includes some of the finest Roman gold coins , aurei to come to auction in decades. The collection was formed with the diligent assistance of Hadrien Rambach and brought to market with support from Stack’s Bowers Galleries’ Lawrence R. Stack and Numismatica Ars Classica’s Arturo Russo. The combined experience of these numismatic experts ensures that the presentation of the La Borde Collection will be exceptional. A great majority of the coins to be auctioned feature esteemed provenances; a provenance bibliography by Mr. Rambach is included in the catalog and is certain to be a valuable resource to current and future collectors.
Lot 33 Clodius Albinus, 193 – 195 Estimate: 350’000 CHF
The quality of these roman gold coins speaks to the passion and dedication invested in building this collection. Part 1 features 68 aurei, including extreme rarities and pieces of outstanding quality, resulting in a truly spectacular opportunity. As an example, Lot 33 offers an aureus of Clodius Albinus, an exceedingly rare piece with possibly only three examples known, of which this is the finest. It is indeed a beautiful coin, virtually as struck and nearly Fleur de coin.
Another magnificent highlight is Lot 2, an aureus issued by moneyer Numonius Vaala that features a remarkable design. This very rare piece is one of just 15 known examples, of which only three are in private hands. The provenance for this coin stretches back through centuries of numismatic stewardship.
Continuing the list of noteworthy pieces is an aureus of Nerva (Lot 15), the cover coin on Sear’s book on Roman Imperial coinage.
Lot 38 Caracalla, 198 – 217 Reverse Aureus Estimate: 30’000 CHF
Another incredible piece is Lot 38, an aureus of Caracalla that features a fierce radiate lion holding a thunderbolt in its maw on the reverse.
Lot 39, an aureus of Macrinus, is formerly from the prestigious Trau collection.
Many other lots in this sale could certainly be called highlights, including but not limited to: Lot 48, an aureus of Tacitus; Lot 57 (Maximianus Herculius); and Lot 63, an aureus of Constantius I Chlorus of fine style.
