Second Coin in New Turtle Series Features the Hawksbill

  • Second Ever 50p on behalf of British Indian Ocean Territory
  • Diamond Finish commemorative coins available with die mark

The British Indian Ocean Territory plays an important role in this part of a sea turtle’s life as the territory provides these wonderful creatures a foraging ground.

Therefore, Pobjoy Mint is delighted to announce the second release in the new 50p Turtles series featuring the hawksbill.

The hawksbill sea turtle gets its name from its narrow, elongated head that tapers sharply to a “V”-shaped lower jaw. It is one of the smallest species of marine turtles, measuring 75 – 90 cm in length and weighing around 70 kg.

Although Indian Ocean turtles tend to be smaller than those living in the Pacific and the Atlantic oceans. Diego Garcia in the British Indian Ocean Territory plays host to a thousand nesting females each year trying to protect this critically endangered species.

The design on the coin itself features a sleepy-looking Turtle swimming in the ocean. The obverse of the coin features the Pobjoy Mint exclusive effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
