To commemorate the 80th Anniversary of the start of the Second World War, Pobjoy Mint is pleased to announce a new three-coin set on the behalf of British Indian Ocean Territory. In 1942 the British opened RAF Station Diego Garcia and established an advanced flying boat unit at the East Point Plantation. East Point is an abandoned settlement on the east of the atoll of Diego Garcia in the British Indian Ocean Territory.
During the course of the Second World War, aircraft were flown from the station in search of Japanese and German submarine and surface raiders. At Cannon Point, a royal marine’s detachment installed six naval guns. Then in February 1942, the mission was to protect the small Royal Navy base and Royal Air Force station located on the island from Japanese attack.
Following the conclusion of hostilities with the end of the Second World War looming, the station was closed on 30th April 1946.
- The first coin shows a British Airman along with three planes which are a Hurricane, a Spitfire, and a Lancaster.
- The second coin shows a British Sailor along with three ships which are a King George class battleship, an Admiral class battlecruiser, and a Flower class corvette.
- The third and final coin shows a British Soldier along with three tanks which are a Matilda, a Churchill, and a Cromwell.
Each coin has the wording “1939 – The Second World War – 1945” together with the £2 denomination. The obverse of the coin features the Pobjoy Mint exclusive effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
