Spink: A Selection of Fine World Coins, Medals at NYINC

As we have just finished celebrating Spink’s 350th anniversary in 2016, we look forward to 2017 and all it has to bring. We also wish our clients another fun and successful year of collecting! We dedicate to them three NYINC auctions, which will take place on January 13 and 15 at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City.

This small selection of world fine coins and medals (third auction on 1/15 at 11:00 a.m.) includes just 57 lots. It is a small but mighty sale that reflects Spink’s approach to meet the diverse collectible interests and budgets of our clients while presenting highly desirable rarities – and even a superb group of specimens rarely seen at auction!

From the portion of ancient coins is a sweep of fine examples, beginning with a gold Gordian III AV aureus (lot 207; estimate $20,000-25,000) and going all the way through to a modern French specimen: a 1959 gold 1 Franc pattern essay (lot 241; estimate $10,000-12,000), this catalogue covers more than 2,000 years of numismatics.

Amongst the rarities from across the world, you will find an exceptionally rare Indian Shah Shija Silver Rupee silver (lot 212; estimate $6,500-8,000), and two other extremely scarce Asian patterns, an Indochina 1928 20 Cents essay (SP64) (lot 213; estimate $6,000-8,000) and a Thai Rama V (lot 214) 1908 RS127 Silver 1 Bath essay (SP64).

Continuing on in Asian coinage, Spink is proud to auction eight Chinese coins, ranging from an extremely rare pattern coin “Jia Quing tongbao” (“zu qian” or “mother for mother coins”) (lot 218; estimate $14,000-16,000) to the iconic 1927 Sun Yat-Sen Silver Mausoleum Dollar (MS61) (lot 225; estimate $25,000-35,000) and three sycees. This is the first time that Spink will be presenting Chinese cash coins and ingots authenticated and graded by the Chinese leading grading service HUAXIA, and we trust that the expertise, security and transparency, which they are known for will bring additional collectors, interest and confidence to the sale.

Spink is thrilled to present a splendid exceptionally rare 1810 40 Franchi (18 struck of the two known varieties) (lot 246; estimate $50,000-60,000), with only three other examples (all varieties combined) appearing at auction in the last 15 years and this example is the first ever to be auctioned in the U.S.A.

Also one of the brightest highlights of this auction’s catalogue, is an extremely rare Territorial California Gold 1852 $50 Augustus Humbert in exceptional condition, graded PCGS MS62 (lot 262; estimate $100,000-150,000).
