Offered as part of our January 2017 Collectors Choice Online Auction is a gorgeous Gem 1914-D Indian quarter eagle $2.50 gold coin that ranks among the finest survivors of this desirable issue. The 1914-D is the second of just three years that Indian quarter eagles were struck at the Denver Mint and it is largely overshadowed by the low-mintage 1911-D.
While of unremarkable scarcity in circulated and lower Mint State grades, the 1914-D is unquestionably rare in Gem condition. Even Uncirculated pieces are often poorly struck and marred by heavy marks with eye appeal that is generally below average. However, perhaps 80 or so exist in grades of MS-65 and above, with just a single example known in Superb Gem preservation. The present piece is tied for finest certified by PCGS.
Each side of this gorgeous jewel glistens with bright and silken luster. Ivory-gold surfaces reveal soft splashes of powder blue and pale pink hues under a light source. Sharp peripheral elements transcend the soft strike that is typically encountered. The surfaces are nice under a glass and deliver a truly superlative aesthetic overall.
