For the first time in its history, the Federal Mint Swissmint has dedicated a commemorative coin to a living person: tennis champion Roger Federer. One of if not the most important individual Swiss athletes is also Switzerland’s perfect ambassador to the rest of the world.
It is all reason enough for Swissmint to honor Federer with a 20-franc silver coin. The issue will take place on January 23, 2020, but pre-sale of the Uncirculated coins began on December 2, 2019. In May 2020, an additional Roger Federer gold coin will be available.
No other Swiss citizen has worldwide recognition similar to Roger Federer.
His tennis records are hard to count – Federer was in series for 237 weeks. First in the world, he has the most men’s singles Grand Slam titles (20) and to date, 103 individual titles won. His records and his varied game make him the best player in tennis history.
But Roger Federer is also involved with his Foundation, started in 2003, that supports aid projects for children. In 2006 he was also the first Swiss citizen to become an International Unicef Ambassador. His sporting achievements, his social commitment, his naturalness and down-to-earth demeanor–as well as his way of dealing with his fans–encouraged Swissmint to honor him.
A Pre-Sale for the First Time
Swissmint expects great interest in the Roger Federer commemorative silver collector coins worldwide. That’s why, for the first time, the Swiss Federal Mint is offering the Uncirculated 20-franc silver commemorative coin via pre-sale. The coins are available from December 2, 2019 exclusively via the Swissmint online shop at www.swissmintshop.ch in a limited edition. The pre-sale will take end no later than December 19, 2019, unless the first strike of 55,000 pieces is sold out in advance. Shipping on February 3, 2020, the Roger Federer silver coin will be issued January 23. Should demand compel, Swissmint reserves the right to exceed the first mintage amount and produce a maximum of 40,000 more coins and bring them out in May 2020.
The Roger Federer silver coins in the qualities “Proof” and “Folder” can only be ordered from the issue date of January 23, 2020.
Description of the Different Silver Finishes
- Uncirculated – Struck in the normal machine cycle, packed in foil (blister)
- Folder – Uncirculated coin packed in a representative, multi-colored cardboard card with additional images and information in four languages on the topic and the artist
- Proof – Highest embossing quality, one-off production. Die is only for approx. 500 embossings used, coin planchets are additionally polished in a complex process and surface treated. Coins individually packed in coin boxes, sold in cases with numbered certificates of authenticity
