MA-Shops Gold $20

My previous blog about the Morgan Dollar was a small success. It seems that there is a significant amount of interest in information about coins from the USA. This is not strange because these coins have several attractive aspects to them. This large interest in Europe and elsewhere can be explained as follows.

At first, a lot of people find themselves fascinated by the United States and that nation’s history, and collecting is a very popular way to connect with that history. Secondly, these coins are designed from a level of high aesthetic expectations. You cannot deny that there is some beauty in these coins. Real artists have created and thought about the designs of these pieces.

These two elements also happen to help make U.S. coins very valuable in worth. The demand for coins from the USA keeps rising, especially when it comes to coins of a higher quality. This development correlates with the fact that these coins are also very popular with investors. Therefore, I will discuss in this blog another famous coin from the United States: the $20 Liberty Head Double Eagle gold coin.

The iconography of the coins is typical for the United States. The head of Liberty is depicted in a classical, Greco-Roman manner. She looks to the left and she is wearing her hair to the back. A diadem, inscribed with the deeply rooted American term “Liberty”, adorns the top of her head. The effigy is surrounded by 13 stars, referring of course to the original 13 British American colonies. The iconography on the reverse is a typical American heraldic eagle holding a double ribbon that bears the characteristic American phrase (in Latin) “E Pluribus Unum’”. This means “One out of many” and is the traditional motto of the United States.

The 20 dollar Liberty Head was first minted in 1849 but only a relatively small number of patterns were minted in this year. Nowadays, only one specimen of this year is known to still exist. The type was minted until 1907, and while the 20 dollar gold double eagle was still minted after this date it featured a new design. The mass of the coin is 33.431 g and the diameter is 34.1 mm. $20 Liberty Head double eagles were minted in Carson City, Denver, New Orleans and San Francisco (the mintmark can be found below the eagle on the reverse). The alloy of the coin is made from 90% gold and 10% copper. With almost a troy ounce of gold, this coin is also very popular with investors in precious metals.

This coin can be collected in several ways. But it is very popular to seek the highest quality you can afford. And I think this is a trend we can see with all modern coins – a topic I will discuss in another blog.
