UPDATE: The 2015 LBJ Coin & Chronicles Set has officially SOLD OUT. According to a notice sent out by the U.S. Mint at 4:50 pm EST, all 25,000 units of the Johnson Coin & Chronicles Set had been sold by 3:57 and are at the Mint’s fulfillment center ready to ship. No new inventory will be forthcoming.
At noon Eastern Standard Time (EST) today, October 27, the United States Mint will begin accepting orders for the 2015 Coin & Chronicles Set – Lyndon B. Johnson (product number AX4). The Johnson Coin & Chronicles Set is the fourth and final Coin & Chronicles Set of 2015, following the successful releases of the Truman, Eisenhower and Kennedy sets.
The Harry S. Truman Coin & Chronicles Set was released on June 30 and sold out within 15 minutes amid some customers complaining of issues with the website ordering system.
The Dwight D. Eisenhower Coin & Chronicles Set was released on August 11 and sold out in less than 15 minutes. This time, Mint communications officials stated that the main website (www.usmint.gov) was down for approximately 20 minutes (12:04 pm to 12:21 pm EST) due to problems with an unrelated application. Customers who were already on the website during that time were able to order the set but anyone attempting fresh access to the site were unable to reach it.
The John F. Kennedy Coin & Chronicles Set–the most anticipated of the four releases–was released on September 16 and went on back order within 10 minutes. It is listed as “Currently Unavailable” on the Mint’s website, but customers can sign up for an email reminder when stock is available again.
But despite the Kennedy set’s almost three-times-larger product limit (50,000, compared to 17,000 for the Truman and Eisenhower sets), the latest sales figures from the Mint show that 49,171 units have already been purchased. This figure, however, comes after several downward adjustments, with the Mint reporting 49,370 units sold by October 11 and a peak of 49,733 units sold by October 4.
New U.S. Mint sales figures will be available this evening, at which time CoinWeek will update the numbers.
No systematic computer issues were reported by customers or the United States Mint in relation to the Kennedy set rollout.
The Johnson Coin & Chronicles Set, while not expected to sell as well as the JFK set, should still attract a great amount of interest due to the Reverse Proof presidential $1 coin it contains. All 2015 Coin & Chronicles Sets have included Reverse Proof versions of their respective presidential dollars, available only in the Coin & Chronicles sets. The set also contains a Lyndon B. Johnson presidential medal in .999 fine silver, a postage stamp from 1973 honoring the late president, and a well-illustrated booklet discussing the president’s life and time in office.
A product limit of 25,000 is in place, as well as an order limit of two sets per household. Retail price is US$57.95.
CoinWeek will be watching today’s release and keeping you posted on the latest developments.
