At the January 2012 Florida United Numismatist (FUN) Convention, CoinWeek interviewed Brent Glass, Director the Museum of American History at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C..

Glass discussed the importance of the National Numismatic Collection and efforts the numismatic industry had undertaken to insure that this historic collection could be enjoyed by generations of future collectors.

How Did Heritage Auctions Raise Money to Support the National Numismatic Collection in 2012?

At a special session of Heritage Auctions’ January 2012 FUN Show sale, Heritage collaborated with the numismatic industry to establish an endowment for the National Numismatic Collection at the Smithsonian Institution.

The National Numismatic Collection is one of the most important institutionally-held numismatic collections in the entire world, with unrivaled holdings in United States coinsand currency – as well as numismatic and monetary material from around the world. Among the most famous rarities in the National Numismatic Collection is the unique 1849 Liberty Head $20 double eagle gold coin, two 1877 gold $50 pattern coins (half unions), one of the five known 1913 Liberty Head nickels, three 1804 dollars, one of which is the unique Class II specimen, and two 1933 Saint-Gaudens double eagles.

One of the highlights from the 2012 sale was a PCGS PR66D Deep Cameo Morgan dollar from the Jackson Hole Collection, which added $115,000 USD to the museum’s endowment.

“The National Numismatic Collection is a treasure that the museum holds in trust for the country and these artifacts preserve stories of American history that connect us to the people and events that shaped the nation,” said Brent D. Glass, director of the museum. “This auction will help to build an endowment for the care, research, and accessibility of the NNC.”
