The Coins

The South Korea Winter Olympic set is a two-coin set celebrating both the Ice and the Snow events at the 2018 Winter Olympics.

The reverse of the ‘Ice’ coin is split horizontally and features two of the most popular sports, Bobsleigh and Figure Skating. A lone Olympian is seen traveling at speed down a track on a Skeleton and five Figure Skaters are seen skating in unison. The ‘Snow’ coin shows an Alpine skier slicing through the snow and a Snowboarder shredding down a mountain.

On both coins the two depicted sports have been segregated by using different frosting techniques on each sport. The upper sport is shown with the athletes frosted in relief with a polished background. The sport shown in the lower half of the coin utilizes a reverse frosting technique that has the athletes polished in relief which the background frosted which gives the impression of the snow or ice upon which the sport takes place.

The obverse features the Fijian Coat of Arms, a heraldic design consisting of a shield with the Cross of St. George, Fijian Warriors, a canoe and a Lion on a stunning proof background.

Behind the Coin

The 2018 Winter Olympics, officially known as the XXIII Olympic Winter Games, is to be held in PyeongChang, South Korea and is a multi-sport game scheduled to take place from February 9-25.

During the voting undertaken to choose the host country, PyeongChang beat Munich, Germany and Annecy, France, securing the victory with two thirds of the votes.

The games will feature 102 events across seven sports that include multiple different styles of skiing such as Alpine, Cross-country, Freestyle and Ski Jumping. Ice skating is also a very prominent sport and includes Speed Skating, Short Track, Figure Skating. The Olympians due to compete come from a total of 83 nations at time of writing (however this may increase).

The tickets to see to see these world class Olympians perform cost various amounts between £14 and £600 (approx. $18.48 and $792 USD), with tickets to the opening ceremony costing up to £1,000 (~$1,320). The higher-profile sports, such as Figure Skating and Men’s Hockey, attract the highest ticket price.
