In 1985, when Robert Zemeckis’ classic sci-fi comedy Back to the Future was released, the date October 21, 2015 seemed like an eternity away. The date, of course, was the far-away future date that Doc Brown and Marty McFly travelled to at the end of the film in their flying DeLorean Time Machine. That version of the future was explored in great detail in the film’s sequel Back to the Future, Part II (1989).
Today, the date October 21, 2015, is a page in history. Curious are the predictive qualities of the film… a reminder of how science-fiction becomes science-fact with inspiration, ingenuity, and hard work.
The Perth Mint has honored “Back to the Future Day” with the striking of two collector coins on behalf of the Island Nation of Tuvalu: one, a Overboard coin, and this, a round Tuvalu $1 silver coin that comes in a special collectible DeLorean DMC-12 case.
CoinWeek couldn’t wait to get our hands on one to show you this unique commemorative coin and its faithfully-recreated DeLorean DMC-12 display case. What follows in this video is kitschy and fun post-modern coin coolness.
