The Pobjoy Mint is proud to present the third release in the series of coins featuring the wondrous flamingos on behalf of the British Virgin Islands.
The English word ‘flamingo’ comes from the Spanish word flamengo, meaning “flaming” or “flame-colored”, in representation of the bird’s reddish or pink color. There are six existing flamingo species recognized by most sources and it is these six species that will feature on this series of coins.
These tropical birds have long legs, long curvy necks and, of course, they are pink. A flock of flamingos can include several hundred birds. They often perform their mating displays together, rather like a synchronized flamingo flamenco!
The third coin in the series features the Chilean flamingo. A large species of flamingo at 110 to 130 cm tall, the Chilean variety is closely related to American and greater flamingos, sometimes being mistaken as the same species. The Chilean flamingo’s beak is white near its face and descending to a black coloration as one gets nearer the tip. Like other species of flamingo, the bill of the Chilean has lamellae that serve as a filter to their food. The Chilean flamingo lives in large flocks in the wild and is known for being flamboyant and social.
The coin depicts two adult Chilean flamingos with their chick standing between them in shallow water. The coin has been produced in Virenium®, a light gold metal developed by Pobjoy Mint. The adult flamingos on the coin have a pink plumage and can be differentiated by their greyish legs with pink joints. The obverse of the coin features the exclusive Pobjoy Mint effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
We have produced a collector’s album (sold separately) for this set of colored flamingos which provides interesting facts and information about the individual birds.
