New Portuguese 2 Euro Coin Celebrates 40th Anniversary of Revolution

The European Union Central Bank has announced the release of a 2 Euro coin honoring Portugal’s Carnation Revolution. The April 1974 event was a bloodless coup that toppled Portugal’s authoritarian Estado Novo regime.

euro2The new Portuguese commemorative coins are intended for circulation and have legal tender status throughout the eurozone, in accordance with a 2009 monetary agreement with the European Union.

The coin’s design features two curves, which represent the shape of a carnation, the flower symbolizing the movement. The inscription “PORTUGAL” and the Portuguese Coat of Arms are depicted on the top of the flower. The date of the event, “25 DE ABRIL” (April 25) is depicted in the center of the design, while the inscription “40 Anos” (40 Years) is located at the bottom. The typography for the text is based on political posters from the revolution.

The coin’s outer ring depicts the 12 stars of the European flag.
