The Austrian Mint is dedicating a new three-part series of 50 Euro gold coins to a very special subject: the Vienna Schools of Psychotherapy and three of their prominent representatives. The series starts with its pioneer, the inventor of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud. Freud’s theories did nothing less that start a revolution in the spiritual and intellectual life of man.
Sigmund Freud, Alfred Adler and Viktor Frankl: all three worked in Vienna and represent different directions in the completely new scientific discipline of psychotherapy at the beginning of the 20th century. Freud is the pioneer of psychoanalysis, Adler established a school of individual psychology, and Frankl developed logotherapy and the analysis of existence. These names stand for the three schools to which this series is devoted.
The new series, with coins appearing once a year, begins with Sigmund Freud. Freud is considered one of the most influential thinkers of the 20th century, one whose insights are many fold. He pointed to the unconscious and to what extent it influenced our behavior. Freud dared to demystify sexuality and look at it as an integral part of human existence.
The obverse of the coin shows a portrait of Sigmund Freud. A section of a photograph by Ferdinand Schmutzer from the year 1926 served as the model. The other side focuses on a central theme in Freud’s work: Lust. This is visualized by a pair of lovers. The lovers seem to be withdrawn from reality and sunk in a common dream, a mysterious dream, from which ornaments flit in and out around them with no more substance than an idea.
The 50 Euro gold coins of the series Viennese Schools of Psychotherapy and their certificates ship in an elegant, black wooden case with matching slipcase.
