Perth Mint Coin Profiles – Australia 2018 Kookaburra 5oz Silver High Relief Proof Coin

2018 Australian 5 oz. kookaburra silver coin

This 5oz silver proof high-relief coin features the 2018 Australian kookaburra design showcasing one of Australia’s most distinct and unique species.

Each coin is struck by The Perth Mint from 5oz of 99.99% pure silver in proof quality, and issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965.

The Perth Mint will release no more than 500 of the Australian Kookaburra 2018 5oz Silver Proof High Relief Coin.

Design

2018 Australian 5 oz. kookaburra silver coinThe reverse of each coin portrays a flying kookaburra against the backdrop of a full moon. The inscription AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA, The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark and the 2018 year-date are also included in the design. The kookaburra is a kind of kingfisher, a bird common to much of the world; they are “terrestrial”, however, and not seafaring.

The Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the monetary denomination are depicted on the obverse.

The coin’s high relief reverse and obverse are minted on concave surfaces to ensure the optimum flow of metal is achieved by the strike of the die.

Designer(s):

Since 1998, Ian Rank-Broadley’s fourth effigy of HRH Queen Elizabeth has served with distinction as the obverse for coins of the UK and the Commonwealth (View Designer’s Profile).

After teaching at the Western Australia School for Art Design and Media for over 40 years, Neil Hollis joined the Perth Mint as a designer in 2015.
