By the Italian Mint ……
The Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato S.p.A., according to the Decree of the Ministry of Economy and Finance no. 6619 of 27 January 2017, has provided for the mintage of the 10 Euro silver proof coin “The Sassi of Matera, Basilicata – Italy of Arts Series”. The new silver commemorative coins were issued September 18.
Matera, one of the oldest cities in the world, can boast a unique architecture and an extraordinary rocky landscape. The ancient dwellings dug in the natural rock caves on its territory witness human settlements dating back to the Paleolithic Age. The Sassi, or “Stones”, of Matera were inscribed on the World Heritage List of UNESCO in 1993.
On the obverse is the Church of Santa Maria de Idris, which is nestled in the upper part of the rocky spur of the Montirone, in the surroundings of San Pietro Caveoso; around, the inscription “REPUBBLICA ITALIANA”; on the right, the last name of designer Maria Angela Cassol is found.
On the reverse is a detail from a fresco in the rock-church of Santa Lucia alle Malve; on the left the letter “R” identifying the Mint of Rome, the year of the coin’s issue “2017” and the value “10 EURO”; above, the arch-shaped inscription “ITALIA DELLE ARTI”; in exergue, “MATERA”.
