Celebrating 90 Years of The Ghan With a New 50c Coin and Competition

The Royal Australian Mint is celebrating 90 years of Journey Beyond Rail Expeditions’ The Ghan, with a new colored 50 cent coin depicting the iconic Australian train and the launch of a competition to win twotickets for the transcontinental journey.

Royal Australian Mint CEO Ross MacDiarmid says the new coin and exciting competition celebrates one of Australia’s most famous railway journeys.

“This striking limited edition coin tells the story of one of the world’s great railway journeys and the Royal Australian Mint is excited to share yet another new coin with train lovers, coin collectors, fans of The Ghan and the Australian public,” said Mr MacDiarmid.

Journey Beyond Rail Expeditions Managing Director Steve Kernaghan said they are thrilled to be partnering with the Royal Australian Mint to share a special edition coin that gives a nod to the legendary train.

“The Ghan is a national icon and celebrating 90 years of adventure across the country is a significant achievement,” said Mr. Kernaghan.

In 1929, the Afghan Express steam train commenced its first route to Stuart (now Alice Springs). In its early days, the train journey could be unpredictable and was once famously stranded in the desert for two weeks. Now known as The Ghan, the Journey Beyond Rail Expeditions route has expanded from Adelaide in South Australia through Alice Springs, all the way to Darwin. The 2,979km journey is a luxury tourist experience in its own right and includes off-train excursions in locations such as Coober Pedy, Alice Springs, and Katherine.

The Mint is offering the exclusive opportunity to win two tickets for The Ghan’s luxury trip from Adelaide to Darwin (one-way). Customers who purchase a 2019 50c Coloured Uncirculated Coin – 90th Anniversary of The Ghan coin, can enter the competition to win, simply by sharing a photo featuring their new 50c Ghan coin depicting where their journey will begin. Winners will be announced on September 6, 2019. Complete instructions on how to enter and conditions of entry are available here.

The 90th Anniversary of the Ghan – 2019 50c Colored Uncirculated Coin is available in a limited mintage of 30,000 – retailing for $15.00 AUD. The coins are Australian legal tender and can be purchased from the Mint’s website or Contact Centre (1300 652 020).

2019 $5 Silver Domed Proof Coin – 1626 A New Map of the World

Following on from our previous release in Gold and the 1812 New Map of the World Coin, the design of this stunning 2019 $5 Silver Proof Domed Coin is based in a 1626 map by famous English cartographer John Speed.

The coin shows the Western Hemisphere as it was depicted on Speed’s opulently-decorated map, produced during the great Age of Discovery.

A New and Accurate Map of the World was originally published in 1626 in an atlas called Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World, by English cartographer John Speed.

The highly-decorated map was often removed from the Atlas to be displayed as a piece of art.

The map includes astronomical drawings and diagrams, mythical figures, and portraits of famous navigators Drake, Magellan, Cavendish, and Van Der Noort.

The Western Hemisphere of the map, which is featured on this exquisite domed coin, includes a mention of explorer Christopher Columbus and his 1492 discovery of America. Interestingly, California is depicted as an island: a concept that dated from the 1500s. An original print of this fascinating map, one of the very first English-published world maps, is held in the collection of the National Library of Australia and can be viewed on their website.

The final release in the Echoes of Australian Fauna series, the limited-production 2019 $5 Nickel Plated and Selectively Gold Plated Fine Silver Proof Coin features the elusive Night Parrot. The night parrot’s story has a happy ending: the bird, long feared extinct, was recently rediscovered in the remote Australian outback. The beauty of this exquisite coin, with its black nickel and selective gold plating, reflects the fragile beauty of the spinifex habitat of the night parrot. The obverse of the coin features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, as sculpted by Ian Rank-Broadley (View Designer’s Profile). Previous releases in this series featured the extinct Tasmania Tiger and the Lesser Bilby.
