The Second World War was a global war that lasted from 1939 to 1945, although related conflicts began earlier. It was the most global war in history and directly involved more than 100 million people from over 30 countries. To show the unity between the United States and Great Britain during this conflict, Pobjoy Mint is pleased to announce a new coin that symbolizes both countries standing strong together with the iconic American Eagle and British Lion.
At the outbreak of World War II, the United States assumed Britain’s defense responsibilities in the Caribbean. In September 1940, the two countries agreed to the Lend-Lease Agreement, which was also known as the Bases-for-Destroyers Agreement. Under its terms, the United States established 11 military bases in the area. After President Franklin D Roosevelt designated the Caribbean as a coastal frontier it became the forward edge of American defense strategy during the war.
Based on a vintage patriotic poster, the reverse of the coin shows Uncle Sam with an eagle representing the United States and Britannia, holding a shield and trident with a lion representing Great Britain. Uncle Sam is common national personification of the American government of the United States in general that, according to legend, came into use during the War of 1812.
The wording “World War II” appears in the surround with the value at the base. The obverse of the coin, issued on behalf of the British Virgin Islands, features the exclusive Pobjoy Mint effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
The Sterling Silver coin is protected by an acrylic capsule and then packaged in a beautiful red box and includes a Certificate of Authenticity. The Uncirculated Cupro Nickel Coin is shipped raw in tubes.
