Sesquicentenary of Gustav Vigeland

In 2019, the City of Oslo and the Vigeland Museum will jointly commemorate the sesquicentenary of the birth of the sculptor Gustav Vigeland. To mark the occasion, Norges Bank has decided to issue a special edition 20-krone circulation world coin.

The sesquicentenary will be an opportunity to promote public awareness of and interest in Gustav Vigeland, the artist responsible for one of Norway’s best-known tourist attractions: the Vigeland Sculpture Park in Oslo. The aim is to present the breadth, scope and significance of Vigeland’s artistic output and showcase the artist’s life and work.

A number of events are planned throughout 2019, including a major sesquicentenary exhibition at the Vigeland Museum and a nationwide travelling exhibition in collaboration with the National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design.

The world coin’s date of issue will be set at a later time.

Legendary Physical Days

This year’s Vilnius University Physical Days were held for the 50th anniversary. A special denomination of collector world coin – 1.5 euros – has been made for this joyful celebration.

The stylized dinosaur at the bottom has in her forehead a symbol of the 50th day of the Physical Days of Vilnius University. Next to the emblem of the state is the figure of Vytis. Also, the inscriptions “LITHUANIA”, 2018, the denomination of the coin 1.50 euros, and the logo of the manufacturer UAB Lithuanian Mint.

The reverse of the world coin features a stylized student physicist designed by Dinas Zauras, as well as a dinosaur truck. The symbols, including the composition of the frosted figures, are arranged on the reverse so as to convey an illusion – the movement of the circle. The reduced birdseye view of Vilnius University from reminds the viewer of the goal of Physical Day – the Faculty of Philology, where philologists are waiting for them. The composition is labeled “VILNIUS UNIVERSITY”, “FiDi 50”.

Michael the Brave, Forerunner of the Great Union

Pursuant to the provisions of Law No. 312/2004 on the Statute of the National Bank of Romania, as of 30 April 2018, the National Bank of Romania will put into circulation, for numismatic purposes, a gold world coin dedicated to Michael the Brave, forerunner of the Great Union.

The coin has the following characteristics:

  • Face value: lei 100
  • Metal: gold
  • Fineness: 900‰
  • Shape: round
  • Diameter: 21 mm
  • Weight: 6.452 g
  • Quality: Proof
  • Edge: milled

Obverse: Michael the Brave riding into Alba Iulia, the inscription “ROMANIA” in an arc, the face value “100 LEI”, the coat of arms of Romania and the year of issue “2018”.

Reverse: the portrait of Michael the Brave and the inscriptions “MIHAI VITEAZUL” and “PRECURSOR AL MARII UNIRI”.

The gold coins are individually housed in transparent plastic capsules and are accompanied by leaflets featuring a presentation of the numismatic issue in Romanian, English and French. Each leaflet comes with a certificate of authenticity bearing the signatures of the Governor and the Chief Cashier of the National Bank of Romania.

The mintage of this numismatic issue is 250 coins.

The selling price is lei 1,695.00 (VAT excluded) per gold coin, including the leaflet.

The gold coins dedicated to Michael the Brave, forerunner of the Great Union are legal tender within the territory of Romania.

The gold coins will be put into circulation, for numismatic purposes, through the regional branches of the National Bank of Romania in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Iași and Timișoara.
