By Royal Australian Mint ……
To celebrate 25 years of Australia’s most famous Banana duo from the ABC, the Royal Australian Mint held a meet-and-greet with the Bananas in Pyjamas and launched the Mint’s fun collectible two coin set, featuring the Bananas in Pyjamas and their friends – the Teddy Bears and Rat in a Hat.

The Bananas in Pyjamas were dressed in their iconic blue and white striped outfits and met with adoring fans for photos, meeting many families who have all enjoyed their show over the years.

Royal Australian Mint CEO Mr. Ross MacDiarmid said it was great to see so many families come out to celebrate the Bananas 25th anniversary.

“For the past 25 years, Bananas in Pyjamas has been a staple in children’s viewing programs, sharing important learnings about cooperation, friendship, creativity and enjoyment,” said Mr. MacDiarmid.

“These coins are not only a playful reminder of our favorite Bananas in Pyjamas characters, but they also reflect on the impact this show has had on generations of young Australians.

“We have also made this set to be an extra special keepsake by creating the first color-printed 5 cent coin.”

Featuring the Bananas in Pyjamas, the Teddy Bears, and Rat in a Hat, both the 20 cent and 5 cent coins are in color and the box set tells the story of the Bananas’ celebrations, providing entertainment for all.

In a 1967 children’s song by Carey Blyton, the world was introduced to the magical idea of pyjama-clad bananas running downstairs in duos, chasing teddy bears on Tuesdays. The song was soon adopted into the repertoire of the beloved Australian children’s television program Play School, where it became familiar fare for the country’s preschoolers.

As the years passed, the song and its banana stars were turned into an animated story on Play School, before having such an impact that the storyline was spun off into its own show in 1992.

The 2017 20c Colored Frosted Uncirculated Coin and the 2017 5c Colored Frosted Uncirculated Coin – Two Coin Set launched at the event retails for $30 AUS and can be purchased online at eshop.ramint.gov.au.
