Pobjoy Mint - 2019 Penguin Titanium and Cu-Ni Coins

Regal Queen Triggerfish from Ascension Island and Macaroni Penguin from South Georgia add to collection of colored titanium

Queen Triggerfish

Our unique colored Titanium coins are proving as popular as ever and Pobjoy Mint are therefore delighted to announce the release of the second Titanium coin from Ascension Island that features the majestic Queen Triggerfish.

The Queen Triggerfish (Balistes vetula) is a reef-dwelling triggerfish found in the Atlantic Ocean. In the eastern Atlantic, it is found at Ascension, Cape Verde and Azores. The large oval-shaped fished is so named due to its unique spines on its anterior dorsal fins which are used to lock the fish into a crevice during the night. The first spine locks and the second spine unlocks, like a trigger. This prevents predators from pulling them free or swallowing the fish.

The Queen Triggerfish also has special membranes that are used to produce a throbbing sound that warns other fish to stay away. The species is generally shy and will move away from divers if followed. However, during the breeding season, they will aggressively defend their nests and they can inflict a nasty bite as they have strong jaws with strong incisor-like specialized teeth, which are used to chisel holes into the hard shells of their prey.

The design on this beautiful new coin shows a Queen Triggerfish swimming above a coral reef. The obverse of the coin features the exclusive Pobjoy Mint Effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

The coin is available in colored Purple Titanium and also in Unc. Cupro Nickel. Titanium reacts differently with every strike, so each Titanium Queen Triggerfish coin is technically different and varies slightly in color. There is also a lined effect that is present on the coins that are unique to this metal.

Macaroni Penguin

Our series of titanium coins featuring the wildlife of the British Overseas Territories continues with a fabulous new issue from South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. The new coins focus on the Macaroni Penguin.

Often regarded as the emblem of Antarctica, penguins are the most common birds in the frozen Antarctic. With the total number of breeding penguin pairs in the Antarctic region estimated at around 20 million, they live in vast quantities – with some colonies outnumbering the population of some of our major cities.

Macaroni penguins can be found from the Sub-Antarctic to the Antarctic Peninsula, including South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. The population has declined drastically in several locations, including a drop of 50% in the South Georgia population. This decline in numbers has led to the species being listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

Named after an unusual Macaroni hairstyle of the 18th century, these particular species have spectacular orange tufty plumes for eyebrows. They are also among the more vocal of the penguins, especially when establishing their territories. The design features four Macaroni penguins on a rocky and snowy outcrop with mountains in the background.

Available in colored Pale Blue Titanium and Unc. Cupro Nickel, the obverse of the coin carries the exclusive Pobjoy Mint effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Due to the difficulty of striking Titanium coins and the fact that Titanium reacts differently with every strike, each coin is technically different from all others. There is also a lined effect that is present on the coins that are unique to this metal.
