Rago Arts and Auction Center’s Coins and Currency Auction on August 24 brought $319,674 USD in sales.
Of the 459 lots of rare and ancient coins and currency, early American coppers, including an 1838 Matron Head Large 1C Coin, were among the highest performing. Previously undervalued in the market, these early copper coins are gaining interest within the budding young numismatic community. While the market for US coins remains solid, interest in up-and-coming markets such as world currency shows substantial growth.
The top lot at the Rago coin auction – a U.S. 1902 Liberty $10 Gold Proof Coin, of a mintage of only 113, which sold for $66,275 – broke both the company record for highest price achieved by a single Coin at auction as well as the auction record for this coin in this grade.
“There was a great deal of interest in this sale with some notable results, including record prices for lots such as the 1902 PR67 $10.00,” explained Chris Wise, Director of Rago’s Coins & Currency Department. “World currency was also a big hit with lots of activity. Plus we were happy to see renewed interest from a number of young numismatists, which is very encouraging for the market as a whole.”
Samuel Grillo, Coins & Currency Cataloger, said, “It was refreshing to interact with young numismatists during preview. They had an express interest in the hobby and were extremely knowledgeable. It was also great to see stamp lots do exceptionally well. Lot 455 in particular blew past its estimate.”
Tom Rago, Coins & Currency Specialist, “This was our largest coin auction and we were thrilled to see such a solid showing from top lots, especially the record-breaking Liberty $10 Gold Proof Coin. The interest from this sale has already generated strong lots for our next coin auction on November 30.”
Other noteworthy lots included; lot 25, a U.S. 1911-D Indian $2.50 Gold Coin graded NGC MS61, which sold for $6,628; lot 316, an 1865 National Bank of Frederick Maryland $1 Note, which sold for $5,423; and lot 427, Assorted Foreign Coins & Medals, which sold for $4,820.
Consigments are now being accepted for our next Coins and Currency auction on November 30, 2017.
