25th Anniversary of Breast Cancer Pink Ribbon Commemorated on New 2 Euro Coins

France 2 Euro Breast Cancer Pink Ribbon Commemorative Coin 2017

By CoinWeek News Staff ….
The Paris Mint, otherwise known as Monnaie de Paris, will issue new 2-euro commemorative collector coins honoring the 25th anniversary of the famous pink ribbon symbol of the fight against breast cancer.

The design features a woman holding one such pink ribbon over her left breast, her torso given a naturalistic texture while her right hand and the ribbon itself are rendered sharply and without detail. Currently scheduled for release on September 25, two versions of the coin will be produced: a standard bimetallic composition and a colored version with the ribbon filled in with a rich tone of pink. The standard commemorative will have a retail price of €10, while the colored edition will cost €20.

A surcharge of €2 from each coin will go to support the Estée Lauder Company’s effort to increase awareness of the disease through education, research into a cure and support programs for those who must suffer from the disease. The campaign was started in 1992 by Evelyn Lauder, the daughter-in-law of company founder Estée Lauder. On the board of overseers at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, she funded the Evelyn H. Lauder Breast Center in 1992. That same year, Lauder, along with editor and author Alexandra Penney, launched their first international breast cancer awareness campaign to utilize the pink ribbon as an icon of the effort. Le Cancer du Seins-Parlons-en! was one aspect of that work.

In 1993 Lauder and Penney co-founded the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. After many more years of tirelessly supporting the cause, Evelyn Lauder died in 2011. The Estée Lauder Company and its many subsidiaries continue to produce special-edition products that give a portion of their sales to breast cancer research and awareness efforts.

The 2 euro denomination is bimetallic, the outer ring consisting of a copper-nickel alloy while the inner disc consists of a golden nickel-brass. The reverse, or common side, features a rendition of Europe and the denomination “2 EURO”. Belgian designer Luc Luycx (View Designer’s Profile). In addition to the design elements described above, inscriptions on the obverse include 25e ANNIVERSAIRE DU RUBAN ROSE (“25th Anniversary of the Pink Ribbon”), the dual date 1992 and 2017, and the abbreviation RF (“République française”, or the French Republic). Also present on the inner part of the coin are the cornucopia mintmark of the Monnaie de Paris and the pentagon master’s mark of French Mint Director Yves Sampo. The outer ring features the 12 stars mandated on all national and commemorative euro coinage.
