Austria 2015 Burgenland 10 Euro Silver Coin

Description:

Austria’s eastern province of Burgenland, also known as the “sunny side of Austria”, is a region best known for its National Park of Lake Neusiedl, its hot springs, spas, and its wine. Lake Neusidl is sometimes referred to as the “Sea of the Viennese” due to its close proximity to Vienna. Archaeologists have traced evidence of human civilization in the region to as far back as the neolithic period. The lake is also an important habitat for local and transitory wildlife. In 2001, Lake Neusiedl was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Burgenland is the eighth coin in Austria’s Piece by Piece series. The coin is legal tender and struck in two finishes: Proof and Special Uncirculated. The maximum mintages are 30,000 and 40,000 respectively. The 2015 Burgenland 10 Euro coin is also available in an uncirculated finish with a rilled edge in .999 Copper.

Obverse:

Helmut Andexlinger’s design features the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Lake Neusiedl. Migratory ducks fly overhead. Pelicans feed in the water; one has a leaping frog in its beak. A wall of reeds lines the shoreline. In the distance, two historic temples from the town of Rust. Wrapping around the top of the coin is the inscription REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH. Below this, the inscription NEUSIEDLERSEE (for Lake Neusiedl). Above, denomination and date 10 EURO 2015.

Reverse:

The reverse of the coin bears the design of Leonie Schrollenberger, a child in a regional grade school who won the design competition for this coin. The design was then worked on with Leonie and the mint’s Master Engraver Thomas Pesendorfer to accommodate the areas of bright colour to the textures and relief of a coin. For example, the blue sky of her original drawing becomes the texture as seen behind the stork on the right side of the coin’s reverse. The stork is, of course, standing in Lake Neusiedl. Leonie also included a charming depiction of the castle of Esterhazy in the foreground, and a village centered around a church steeple in the central field. In the upper left area of the design she has included 2 bunches of grapes on a vine, a wine glass and bottle as well as the wooden wine cask.
