The 70th Anniversary of the Italian Constitution and the final phase of the “FIFA World Cup Russia 2018” 21st world championships are the themes that characterize the first numismatic issues of the Italian State Mint.

The two commemorative coins (featuring face values of 5 and 2 euros) dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the signing of the Constitution, have been shown in the preview exhibition at the Senate of the Republic last December 27, inaugurated by President Pietro Grasso, in the Salone degli Specchi of Palazzo Giustiniani.

The Proof 5 euro silver, made by State Mint engraver Luciana De Simoni, is limited to 5,000 pieces. The obverse features an allegory of triumphant Italy holding the Italian flag in green and red enamel, based on a fresco by Cesare Maccari (Sala Maccari, Palazzo Madama, Rome). In Italy’s lap is the inscription “ITALIAN REPUBLIC”; at the bottom to the right is the engraver’s name “L. DE SIMONI “.

The reverse side features an allegorical composition inside a frame on which stands the inscription “• YOU ARE FREE • SII GRANDE”, taken from the fresco by Cesare Maccari depicting the allegory of triumphant Italy (Sala Maccari, Palazzo Madama, Rome). The allegory is formed by a circle and a square, the symbol of perfection and wisdom. Completing the composition are the star of the Italian Republic Italian and a detail of Cesare Maccari, “The literature and the arts’ (Sala Maccari, Palazzo Madama, Rome). The centerpiece is the “EURO 5” denomination, the inscription “ITALIAN CONSTITUTION”, and the dates “1948 2018” shown on the pages of a book. the dates are, respectively, the year the Constitution went into effect and the year of issue of the currency. Below, in the middle, is the mint mark “R”, identifier of the Mint of Rome.

The 2 euro commemorative, created by Uliana Pernazza, is limited to a circulation of 15,000 pieces for the “Fior di Conio” version and 6,000 for the “Proof” version. On the upper right of the obverse are the words “CONSTITUTION” and the monogram “RI” (acronym of the Italian Republic). In the exergue are the inscriptions “SAFE WITH CONSCIOUSNESS”, the Roman mint mark “R”, and the dates “1948 • 2018”. In the round are the 12 stars of the European Union. On the edge, fine knurling with a star and “2” repeated six times, alternately upright and inverted.

The coin dedicated to the FIFA World Cup, the soccer event that thrills millions of sports fans around the world, is silver with a nominal value of 10 euros. It was created in “Proof” by the artist-engraver of the State Mint Valerio De Seta, with a circulation of 6,000 pieces and the following
features:

  • On the obverse, inside a soccer ball, is reproduced a sequence of actions related to sport event of the 2018 World Soccer Championship in Russia, to the right of the name Author “V. DE SETA “; within “ITALIAN REPUBLIC.”
  • On the reverse, a representation of some figurative elements of the Russian cities hosting the event of the football World Cup, with the center of the official logo of the sporting event “FIFA WORLD CUP RUSSIA 2018TM “. In the left field “R” identification of the Mint of Rome; in the exergue is the denomination 10 EURO.
