By National Bank of Ukraine….
On January 5, 2016, the National Bank of Ukraine held a presentation to celebrate the creation of two commemorative coins honoring “Shchedryk” (known in English-speaking countries as the “Carol of the Bells“). The coins come in a 5-hryvnia (UAH) German silver version and a 20-hryvnia silver edition.
The event was attended by representatives of the National Bank of Ukraine and the authors of sketches coins – Volodymyr Taran, Oleksandr Kharuk and Sergey Kharuk.
“Shchedryk” continues the “Ukrainian heritage” series of coins and is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the first performance of a work by Ukrainian composer and innovator, master of choral miniatures and author of about two hundred arrangements of folk songs Mykola Leontovich.
The 20-hryvnia silver coin (with case) is retail priced at about 56 UAH. The 5-hryvnia German silver coin is priced at 38 UAH. Mintages are limited to 3,000 and 50,000 units, respectively.
On the obverse of the 5-hryvnia German silver coin against a light background is a swallow in front of musical notes and clefs. The reverse features a group of singing carolers, one of them holding a Christmas star, above which is inscribed “Shchedryk, Shchedryk, SCHEDRIVOCHKA”.
The 20-hryvnia silver coin features a holographic image of sound vibrations coming from ornately decorated bells. Above this is four bars of “Shchedryk”, and above that is an effigy of Mykola Leontovich and a swallow. An embedded crystal can be found to the left. The reverse features carolers within the center of an eight-pointed star design.
