1870 Double Eagle Proof Featured at GreatCollections

Double Eagle is one of only 4-5 in private hands….

GreatCollections is proud to offer a rare Proof Double Eagle in their auction ending on Sunday, April 13, 2014. The 1870 Double Eagle Proof is graded PCGS Proof-64 DCAM by PCGS and is expected to sell for over $140,000.

1870lib1“It is always a privilege to offer a coin of this stature, which is being sold completely unreserved. The high-end coin market is very vibrant today, and this coin is sure to attract spirited bidding,” said Ian Russell, President/founder of GreatCollections.

Only 35 coins were minted of this rarity with approximately 10-20 known today.

Just four or five coins are available to private collectors; the remaining are in museums and other institutions including the Smithsonian, which holds two examples.

Russell continued: “The last time a coin in this grade was sold, it brought $109,250 back in 2004. We are obviously expecting a higher price today.”
