$7 Million In Rare Coins Sell In Long Beach Auction

Rare double eagles were the featured attractions as the 2015 January 29 – February 1 US Coins Signature Auction in Long Beach saw $7 million in rare coins change hands. All results include a 17.5% Buyer’s Premium.

Easily the star of the show was a 1869 double eagle, graded Proof-65 Ultra Cameo by NGC. Proof gold carries a special mystique due to its beauty and rarity, and the 1869 twenty additionally boasts of one of the smallest mintages in the series. This example is the second finest certified by one of the major grading services, placing it easily within the condition census. It realized $229,125.

An MS64 1920-S double eagle exemplifies the earliest of the many melt rarities towards the end of the Saint-Gaudens series.
