A. H. Baldwin & Sons Ltd, the UK’s premier numismatic dealer and auction house, is pleased to announce that André de Clermont has joined their coin department as Indian, Islamic and South American specialist. André will work alongside Graham Byfield to assist with the continued promotion and expansion of the department.

André began his career at Spink in 1968 and rose to become a main board director, He later became a director of Baldwin’s Auctions Ltd until the takeover by Noble Investments (UK) PLC in 2005. Originally specialising in tokens, he quickly moved on to coins and became well known as an expert on South American coinage. He was instrumental in opening the collector market for Islamic coins in the 1980s and is a popular and highly respected figure in the numismatic world.

Managing Director, Ian Goldbart, commented ‘André has worked with Baldwin’s as a consultant for many years and we are delighted that he has agreed to join us in a permanent role. Baldwin’s are the most prominent international dealer and auctioneer of Indian and Islamic coins; his years of experience and expertise in these markets will make him invaluable to our continued development.’

The timely appointment coincides with Baldwin’s first 2012 sale of Islamic coinage, due to be held on the 25th April. The auction contains some of the finest Islamic rarities, including a bronze portrait medal of Sultan Mehmed II, considered to be the earliest surviving representation of the great Ottoman ruler and an example of one the most highly prized of all Islamic gold coins, an Umayyad Dinar struck in the year 105 H.
