ANS Loans Rare Roman Coins for Bulgari Exhibit

The America Numismatic Society (ANS) has loaned a selection of very rare ancient Roman coins to Italian jeweler Bulgari for their upcoming exhibit “Bulgari & Rome: Eternal Inspiration,” a Roman-inspired jewelry exhibition celebrating Bulgari’s heritage. This short-run exhibition features 18 unique Roman pieces from the Society’s collection alongside the showcased jewelry.

Particular highlights from the ANS include a Gold Treveri Medallion from 293-294 CE, which features busts of Diocletian and Galerius on the obverse and busts of Maximian and Constantius on the reverse, each wearing the imperial mantle; and a RIC I (second edition) Nero bronze sestertius, from 66-68 CE, with a portrait of Nero on the obverse and the Temple of Janus on the reverse. Both coins can be viewed on MANTIS, the ANS’s online collection database, at http://numismatics.org/search/results?q=1967.153.38 and http://numismatics.org/collection/1944.100.39726, respectively. All the Roman coins featured at the exhibit, and the entire ANS collection, can be viewed at http://numismatics.org/search/.

Derived from Bulgari’s archive and private collections, the exhibition showcases jewelry that is inspired by the architecture and monuments of Rome, such as the Pantheon and Via Appia, one of the oldest roads in ancient Rome. One distinct Bulgari piece that directly ties in with numismatics is a necklace created with silver-alloy coins from the Roman Imperial period.

The show, which runs from October 15 through November 22, is open to the public at Bulgari’s flagship store, 730 Fifth Avenue, New York City. A tour can be scheduled by calling (212) 315-9000.

Dr. Ute Wartenberg, Executive Director of the ANS, commented on the collaboration:

“The ANS is pleased to loan a selection of coins to Bulgari for this fascinating exhibit which brings ancient Roman history and architecture into the present-day in a most beautiful display. The coins and jewelry represent the monumental contributions the Romans made to modern society and remind us that the past still serves as inspiration. This project with Bulgari is a great opportunity to highlight works inspired by Rome and to bring the beauty of numismatics to a wider audience.”
