Description:
The first Belgian coin with a face value of 2.5 euros, the Bicentennial of Waterloo commemorative coin marks Napoleon’s staggering defeat 200 years ago. Lion’s Mound is the coin’s central design motif. That mound, constructed between 1820 and 1826, overlooks the site of the historic battle.
The coin is offered as a Proof and packaged in a Belgian “coincard” set, this brass coin has a total authorized mintage of 100,000 pieces (including 30,000 in Proof).
Obverse:
Lion’s Mound with Jean-François Van Geel’s heroic lion statue, it’s right paw resting on a sphere symbolizing the globe. In the shadow of the mountain is a map representing troop formations at the decisive battle. The dual date “1815 2015” bookends the monument. Wrapping around the rim on the coin’s top half are six stars in a ring.
Reverse:
Euro-side: Wrapping around the left: BELGIE – BELGIQUE – BELGIAN. The denomination is inset: 2 1/2 EURO. The date beneath. To the right are the individual countries of the Eurozone with the 12 stars of the Eurozone flag. Curvilinear lines fan beneath the European continent.
