The US Mint has confirmed that the Proof 2016-W Buffalo Gold $50 will be released on the first day (March 31) of the Whitman Baltimore Expo. This is the 10th anniversary of the Gold Buffalo series, which is immensely popular with collectors for its design — adapted from James Earle Fraser’s iconic Buffalo Nickel — and its pure gold .9999 fine composition.

To commemorate the release of these coins, NGC will offer a special BALTIMORE SHOW RELEASES designation for all 2016-W Proof Gold Buffalo $50 coins purchased at the US Mint booth at the Baltimore Expo and submitted to NGC at that show. The original US Mint purchase receipt is required to receive this designation. Coins with the Baltimore Show Releases designation will receive a separate listing in the online NGC Census.

Coins received by NGC on the first day of sales (March 31) at the Baltimore Expo may instead receive NGC’s FIRST DAY OF ISSUE designation. The US Mint purchase receipt is NOT required for this designation but coins must be received by NGC at the Baltimore Show on March 31. Bulk submitters may send coins directly to NGC’s Sarasota, Florida, headquarters for the First Day of Issue designation provided the coins arrive by the following business day (April 1). Coins with the First Day of Issue designation will receive a separate listing in the online NGC Census.

Proof 2016-W Buffalo Gold $50 coins received within the first 30 days of release will be eligible for NGC’s popular EARLY RELEASES® and FIRST RELEASES® designations, which are also listed separately in the NGC Census.
