One of the featured lots in our July 7-10 Long Beach Signature auction is a double-struck Walking Liberty half dollar graded MS64 by NGC. This is a remarkable mint error on a classic obsolete type.

The first strike was normal, but the coin was struck a second time, widely off-center toward six o’clock, at six o’clock relative to the first strike. The second strike obliterates the date and STATES OF from the initial strike. The large S mintmark makes it likely that the coin was struck during World War II.
The brilliant and lustrous surfaces show only incidental marks. A search of the Heritage archives indicate only two prior appearances of a double struck Walking Liberty half: lots 3797 and 3791 in our November 2013 Signature auction. These lots respectively realized $24,675 and $41,125.
