Close to $6.2 million in rare US coins sold in Heritage’s March 29-31 US Coins auction, held at the Heritage world headquarters in Dallas. Post-auction sales continue, and are expected to add to this total. All prices include a 20% Buyer’s Premium.
The standout coin in this auction was an 1854-O double eagle, graded XF45 by NGC, that had been off the market for many years. The 1854-O and 1856-O are the two extremely rare New Orleans issues in the popular Liberty Double Eagle series, both of which sell for high prices whenever they are offered at auction in any grade. This coin sold for $204,000.
Another double eagle shared second honors in this auction. A 1907 High Relief double eagle with Wire Rim, graded MS66 by NGC, brought a final price of $66,000. High Relief double eagles are often considered the most beautiful US coin, and the wire rim variant, evidenced by a raised rim, or “fin” around much of the outside of the coin, signifies that this coin was among the first produced.
Matching the $66,000 sale price was a proof 1881 three dollar gold piece, graded PR66 Cameo by PCGS and certified by CAC. The circulation strike 1881 $3 has a minuscule mintage of 500 pieces, leaving the few proofs under increased demand from date collectors. This coin is among the finest examples of the issue.
