The Heritage Summer FUN auction of US coins is now open for bidding at HA.com/coins. As usual, there are highlights that will whet your numismatic appetite regardless of your tastes in US coins; most of these coins are gathered together in the Premier Session, scheduled for Thursday evening, July 11 at 6PM ET in Orlando, and of course through Heritage Live!. Live sessions will continue in Orlando through July 12, with Internet-only sessions through Heritage Live! scheduled through July 14.
Unlike many of the later rarities in the Saint-Gaudens double eagle series, the 1921 is not found exclusively in Mint State grades, and more examples are seen in circulated grades than in Mint State. This auction contains an attractive example graded MS61 by NGC, an opportunity for the astute collector to acquire an uncirculated example of a true 20th century rarity.
As collectors of 19th century proof coinage are well aware, any proof coin minted before 1858 can be considered a rarity. The proof 1854 three dollar gold piece has a recorded mintage of only 15 coins, although restrikes are suspected (although unproven) to exist. The major grading services have combined to certify only about a dozen examples, with resubmissions possible. One of these, graded Proof-63 Cameo by PCGS, is available in our Summer FUN offerings; this is exceeded in grade by only two examples graded Proof-64 Cameo at PCGS and a Proof-64 example graded by NGC.
Among territorial gold pieces, the Mormon issues of 1849-50 were not well-regarded at the time of issue, with the purity of the gold open to question and lightweight pieces reported. While the Mormon Church accepted these coins at face value, other merchants would only accept them at a significant discount. Today, these coins are very rare highly collectible. This auction features an example of the 1849 quarter eagle issue graded AU55 by PCGS. Mormon issues of any denomination are seldom available in Mint State, and this Choice AU example represents an opportunity for a collector to acquire one of the finest examples available.
