italyferrariobv

Description:

The Enzo Ferrari 10-euro Italian silver coin features the world-known motor racing driver and automobile entrepreneur whose name is associated with some of the fastest cars known. Issued among the Europa Star Programme Series, this silver 10-euro coin is one of dozens that honor Europe’s iconic artistic and cultural icons.

Enzo Ferrari was inspired at a young age to become a race car driver, and by 1919–at the age of 21–Ferrari had made his competitive debut. Ferrari’s racing career accelerated throughout the 1920s and 1930s. By the 1940s, he began manufacturing car parts for racers, and in 1947 founded Ferrari S.p.A., a company in Maranello, Italy, that makes cars bearing his name.

Ferrari’s cars won in numerous races, including the prestigious Le Mans and Formula One events. Though the automotive genius died at the age of 90 in 1988, his cars still reign supreme on the racetrack and on the roadway.

Obverse:

The face of a young woman appears at a left-facing three-quarters-angle within a stylized five-pointed star whose tips exceed the rim of the coin. Elements from the Italian coat of arms, including oak and olive branches and a cogwheel surround the woman’s head. A crown encircles her head.

The words REPUBLICA ITALIANA wrap around the left half of the obverse near the rim; below the female figure appears COLANERI, the surname of designer Maria Carmela Colaneri. At the bottom center is the Europa Star Programme logo, and to the lower right of the obverse is an “R” mintmark signifying the Mint of Rome.

Reverse:

italyferrarirevA three-quarter angle profile of Ferrari wearing glasses in his older years anchors the reverse of the coin. On the left is a horse rearing on its two hind legs as seen in the Ferrari company logo. The name ENZO FERRARI is expressed in two vertical lines on the left side of the coin, above the horse.

Below Ferrari’s neckline is the denomination 10 EURO. Below and to the right of his chin is the date 2016.

Designer(s): Maria Carmela Colaneri is an engraver at the Mint of Rome. She has worked on many designs for Italian euro commemorative coins.
