Description:

The Military Corps of the Italian Red Cross 5-euro silver coin honors the 150th anniversary of the renowned charitable organization. The Italian Red Cross, among the original founding members of the International Red Cross in 1919, was founded in Milan and is presently headquartered in Rome.

The Italian Red Cross has served many causes beyond the Italian borders, including a stint in Korea to help remedy the humanitarian tragedies in the country during the Korean War in the early 1950s. In addition to the Military Corps, other components of the Italian Red Cross include voluntary nurses serving as an auxiliary of the Armed Forces and civilian volunteers of the Italian Red Cross.

Obverse:

The emblem of the Italian Red Cross anchors the obverse with a small, red-enameled cross in the center of the design. Below the Red Cross emblem is a banner bearing the organization’s motto, INTER ARMA CARITAS, which translated into English means “In War, Charity.” Surrounding the top two-thirds of the design are the words REPUBBLICA ITALIANA located along the rim.

Reverse:

A soldier of the Italian Red Cross Corps is seen on the reverse holding a young child during a humanitarian mission. Along the right-side rim are the words CROCE ROSSA ITALIANA (Italian Red Cross), with the words CORPO MILITARE (Military Corps) located in a second line of text below the organization’s name. On the left side of the reverse is an 1866-2016 dual date feature located vertically, behind the figure of the humanitarian aid worker. In the upper-right field is an “R” mintmark signifying the Mint of Rome. Below the humanitarian aid worker are the letters MGU, serving as the initials of designer Maria Grazia Urbani and EURO 5, representing the coin’s face value.

Designer(s): Maria Grazia Urbani is an Italian medalist. She has produced coin designs for Italy and the Vatican.
