Celebration of Yousuf Karsh’s iconic portraits and innovative Year of the Monkey coins also shine a new light on Canada’s heritage

Always keen to celebrate Canada through exciting innovations, the Royal Canadian Mint has launched the world’s first maple leaf-shaped coin. The 2015 $20 Fine Silver Coin – The Canadian Maple Leaf is an intricately engraved coin that required creativity and ingenuity to achieve the realistic shape of a maple leaf on a keepsake which captures the natural beauty of Canada’s national emblem in striking detail.

Some of most influential figures of the 20th century will find a home on Royal Canadian Mint coins thanks to a new fine silver series celebrating the iconic portraits of legendary Canadian photographer Yousuf Karsh. As 2015 marks the 100th anniversary of the Special Theory of Relativity, the first of these 10 oz. fine silver coins features Karsh’s famed portrait of Albert Einstein. Delicate detailing and contrasting finishes bring out the subtleties of light and form which have made Karsh portraits so famous and iconic.

In anticipation of the popular cultural celebration of the Year of [the] Monkey, symbolizing intelligence, charisma and agility, the Mint has issued a number of exciting collectibles. Among these are the first fine silver and pure gold one kilo coins to feature both enamel colouring and a scalloped edge. These 2016-dated coins were designed by Three Degrees Creative Group, as is the 2016 $15 Silver Coin – Lunar Lotus Year of the Monkey. Artist Aries Cheung also celebrates this theme through his designs of the 2016 $15 Fine Silver Coin and $150 Gold Coin – Year of the Monkey.
