Modern World Coins – Romania Celebrates 10 Years in EU with New Commemoratives

As of 19 June 2017, the National Bank of Romania has entered into circulation a set of three coins (gold, silver and copper-plated tombac) and a brass collector coin for numismatic purposes, along with a brass commemorative circulation coin, dedicated to the anniversary of 10 years since Romania’s accession to the European Union.

The coins in the set have the following technical characteristics:

Obverse of the gold coin: a composition containing details of the Brâncovenesc architectural style, the inscription “ROMANIA” in an arc, the face value “100 LEI”, the coat of arms of Romania and the year of issue “2017”.

Obverse of the silver coin: a composition containing details of the Brâncovenesc architectural style, the inscription “ROMANIA” in an arc, the face value “10 LEI”, the coat of arms of Romania and the year of issue “2017”.

Obverse of the copper-plated tombac coin: a composition containing details of the Brâncovenesc architectural style, the inscription “ROMANIA” in an arc, the face value “1 LEU”, the coat of arms of Romania and the year of issue “2017”.

Obverse of the brass collector coin: a composition containing details of the Brâncovenesc architectural style, the inscription “ROMANIA” in an arc, the face value “50 BANI”, the coat of arms of Romania and the year of issue “2017”. Letter “N” inscribed on the base of the first column, as a distinctive sign of the collector coin.

Reverse (common to all coins made of gold, silver, copper-plated tombac and brass): Member States of the European Union distinctively emphasized and the circular inscription “10 ANI DE LA ADERAREA LA UNIUNEA EUROPEANĂ”.

The gold, silver, copper-plated tombac coins and the brass collector coin are individually housed in transparent plastic capsules. The sets of three coins are accompanied by leaflets featuring a presentation of the numismatic issue in Romanian, English and French. Each leaflet comes with a certificate of authenticity bearing the signatures of the Governor and the Chief Cashier of the National Bank of Romania.

The commemorative circulation coins, with face value of bani 50, have the same technical characteristics as the bani 50 coins currently in circulation and will circulate in parallel with the latter.

The mintage is:

  • 150 sets of three coins (made of gold, silver and copper-plated tombac);
  • 5,000 brass collector coins, with face value of bani 50;
  • 1,000,000 brass commemorative circulation coins, with face value of 50 bani.

The selling prices of the set of three coins and of the brass collector coin are:

  • lei 2,100.00, VAT excluded, per set of three coins (made of gold, silver and copper-plated tombac), including the leaflet;
  • lei 10.00, VAT excluded, for the brass collector coin, with face value of bani 50.

The gold, silver and copper-plated tombac coins, the brass collector coins and the brass commemorative circulation coins, dedicated to the anniversary of 10 years since Romania’s accession to the European Union, are legal tender within the territory of Romania.
