NGC Rev. Dr. James Gore King McClure Coin Collection Image Gallery

Numismatic Guaranty Corporation® (NGC®) has created an online image gallery for the Rev. Dr. James Gore King McClure Coin Collection, a fascinating assemblage of coins, tokens and medals collected between the 1860s and 1930s. The collection, which is entirely certified by NGC, will be offered by Heritage Auctions as part of its June 8-13, 2016, Long Beach sale.

The Rev. Dr. McClure was born in 1848 and is believed to have collected coins from the late 1850s or early 1860s until his death in 1932.

mcClure-aHis collection, which has remained intact since his death, is the epitome of what numismatists call a “time capsule collection”—one that captures the interests of collectors in an earlier era.

As a result, the Rev. Dr. McClure Coin Collection presents a rare opportunity to turn back the clock on the coin collecting hobby in the United States.

His collection, for example, contains more than 200 Civil War Tokens, most pristinely preserved and likely pulled directly from circulation by the Rev. Dr. McClure during the Civil War. One highlight is the Civil War Token that depicts the famed USS Monitor, the first ironclad warship commissioned by the United States. The token, which is graded NGC MS 62, is the only brass specimen of the F-241/417A b variety and one of just three examples of this variety in any metal.

mcClure-bThe Rev. Dr. McClure Coin Collection also features a number of phenomenal high grade regular issue coins. The 1877-S/Horizontal Seated Liberty Quarter is particularly impressive. Graded NGC MS 67, it is not only the finest known example of this rare variety by a full two numeric grades but it has also earned the NGC Star Designation® for superior eye appeal.

Also notable is the 1921-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar. A key date with the fourth-lowest mintage in the series, the 1921-S is represented in the McClure Collection by a remarkable MS 66 specimen. This coin is tied with just one other for the finest example graded by NGC.

In addition to high grade rarities, the McClure Collection contains a number of more affordable coins, giving collectors of all interests and levels an opportunity to own a piece from this historic collection.

Collectors and researchers can view the coins from the McClure Collection in an image gallery that has been posted to NGC’s website, NGCcoin.com. The image gallery was built using the latest technologies so that it looks and functions great on all devices including smartphone and tablets.
