Pakistan China Cooperation Honored on 20 Rupee Coin

By CoinWeek News Staff….
The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) is set to release a 20-rupee (Rs.20) commemorative coin on Saturday, January 31 to celebrate 2015, a “Year of Friendly Exchange” between Pakistan and China.

The flags of both nations can be found in the center of the reverse, with the Pakistani flag on the right and the Chinese flag on the left. The inscription YEAR OF FRIENDLY EXCHANGE 2015 curves around the edge of the coin above.

A crescent moon and five-pointed star–symbols of Islam–are in the center of the obverse, facing northwest. Above the moon and star is the inscription ISLAMI JAMHURIA PAKISTAN, meaning “Islamic Republic of Pakistan”, in Urdu script. Under the crescent moon are two sprigs of wheat, with the date 2015 inscribe above them. The face value of the coin straddles the central motif, with “20” on the right and RUPIA (rupees) in Urdu script on the left.

The 10-gram coin consists of a 3:1 copper-nickel alloy and has a diameter of 27.5 mm (slightly over one inch). It comes with a serrated edge.

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time Pakistan has honored its ally China on a commemorative coin. One was issued on October 1, 2009 to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China. A second coin was released on May 21, 2011 to mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The 2011 commemorative also celebrated the 2011 “Year of Pakistan-China Friendship”. Both coins have similar compositions and dimensions to the 2015 issue.

Pakistan has issued only about two dozen commemorative coins in the last 40 years.

At the time of writing, one Pakistani rupee (PKR) trades for approximately $0.01 USD.
