Paper Money Auction – Rare Oil City Bank $5 Color Proof

By Brad CiociolaCurrency Specialist, Stack’s Bowers ……

A very rare $5 color proof from the Oil City Bank of Oil City, Pennsylvania (Haxby PA-380 G6a) will be featured in the Stack’s Bowers Galleries Official Currency Auction of the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Spring Expo in March.

The India paper only proof produced by the American Bank Note Company is printed in green border and protector inks with the vignettes printed in black. A wonderful Civil War-themed vignette is seen at center, depicting Union soldiers reading letters around a camp fire, titled “News From Home”. Two girls are seen in the lower left of the note and a portrait of George Washington seated at a desk is seen in the lower right.

This magnificent proof was last offered as part of the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part VIII by Stack’s in January 2005. Back then the note realized the impressive sum of $3,225 USD. The note, which grades Choice Uncirculated, will carry a pre-auction estimate of $4,000-$6,000.

The Stack’s Bowers Galleries Official Auctions of the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Spring Expo will be held March 29-31, 2017 in Baltimore, Maryland.
