On June 25, Representative Eleanor Norton (D-DC) introduced to Congress a bill to Congress authorizing the United States Mint to produce commemorative coins honoring the life and legacy of Paul Laurence Dunbar. The Paul Laurence Dunbar Commemorative Coin Act of 2018 (H.R. 6214) provides for a maximum of 50,000 $5 gold coins, 400,000 silver $1 coins, and 750,000 clad half-dollar coins to be issued in 2019.

Surcharges for the program are typical for such legislation: $35 for the gold coin, $10 for the silver coin, and $5 for the clad half-dollar. All proceeds from the sale of the coins (minus production and marketing expenses) will go to the Dunbar Alumni Federation. The fund supports the operations and work of the federation to support the academic pursuits of the graduates of Paul Dunbar High School, which is located in Washington, DC.

The District’s Paul Dunbar High School has a long and distinguished history as a leading school for black students. It was the first black public school in the United States and educated generations of gifted scholars, including: civil rights activist and scholar Anna J. Cooper, mathematician Evelyn Boyd Granville, civil rights activist and educator Carter G. Woodson, Major General Frederic E. Davison, and U.S. Senator Edward Brooke.
