Perth Mint Coin Profiles – Australia 2019 Year of the Pig Lunar Series II 1 oz Gold Proof

This spectacular gold coin celebrates the Year of the Pig, the ultimate animal in the 12-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac.

The birth dates for people ruled by the Chinese Lunar pig include 1923, 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007 and 2019. Those born under the sign of the pig tend to be honest, loyal, sincere and generous, with a calm temperament.

Struck by The Perth Mint from 99.99% pure gold in proof quality, the coin is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965.

The Perth Mint will release no more than 388 of the 2019 Year of the Pig 1oz Gold Proof High Relief Coin.

Design

The reverse of the coin features a representation of a domesticated or pet pig, which are typically pink with black markings, amid stylised rocks and foliage including a peony flower. The Chinese character for ‘pig’ and the inscription ‘Year of the Pig’ appear in the design with The Perth Mint’s traditional ‘P’ mintmark.

The Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the 2019 year-date, the weight and fineness, and the monetary denomination are shown on the coin’s obverse. The coin’s high-relief reverse and obverse are minted on concave surfaces to ensure the optimum flow of metal is achieved by the strike of the die.

Designer(s):

Ian Rank-Broadley’s effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was chosen to appear on the coinage of the United Kingdom in 1998. His design began to appear on collector coins that year and became widespread starting in 1999.

Since 2008, Perth Mint artist Aleysha Howarth has infused her personal sense of style and a love for nature into her coin designs. Alicia earned a degree in Graphic Design from the Central TAFE School of Art and Design. Her innovative colorized ballet coin series of 2011 earned her international acclaim. She was also the lead designer of the Perth Mint’s Opal coin series.
