Rare U.S. Currency: PMG Grades Third Known Serial Number 1 Philadelphia $10 Demand 1861 Note

Rare U.S. Currency: 1861 Demand Note Certified

Paper Money Guaranty® (PMG®) recently had the privilege of grading one of the most historically significant and desirable pieces of United States currency. The Serial Number 1 $10 1861 Demand Note from Philadelphia, cataloged as Friedberg 7a, is one of just three examples known. It has not been seen publicly since it was auctioned in 1970 by Sotheby’s.

PMG has graded this important note PMG 30 EPQ. Its rarity is enhanced by its desirability as a Serial Number 1, and it possesses vibrant color and signatures.

18611The high quality signatures bring nice detail to the “for the” inscriptions that still look impeccable over 150 years later. As one of the first $10 “Greenbacks” issued by the United States in 1861 to fund the Union’s campaign during the Civil War, its significance in American history nearly goes unmatched among US currency.

“We could not be more thrilled to see this note after it has been off the market for more than four decades. We are honored to have been selected to grade such an important piece of history,” said PMG Finalizer, Chad Hawk.

This note will highlight Heritage Auctions’ upcoming ANA currency sale, August 5 through 11, 2014 – its first public appearance since 1970. All eyes will be on this impressive rarity when it crosses the block this August. For more information and to bid, visit HA.com.
