Among the highlights of our upcoming Stack’s Bowers Galleries Official Currency Auction of the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Winter Expo is a beautiful “Fancy Back” Fr. 374 1890 $20 Treasury Note graded Choice Extremely Fine 45 EPQ by PMG.

These “Fancy Back” notes differ from the “Open Back” notes of the Series of 1891 in that they feature a fully printed intricate back design with no open spaces aside from the margins. The prominent feature of the back is the large “TWENTY” that curves through the center of the back design. “Open Back” notes on the other hand feature a back design with fewer engraved design elements and more open areas within the design itself.

The face of Fr.374 notes feature a small red scalloped Treasury Seal as well as the engraved signatures of Treasury officials Rosecrans and Nebeker. Just 112 examples of Fr.374 reside in the Track & Price census with this note being a new addition to the census.

This example displays excellent paper surfaces with strict originality apparent. Just three light folds keep this choice example from a full Uncirculated grade. PMG has added the comment “Great Color” to the back of the holder attesting to the note’s exceptional quality. The note carries a pre-auction estimate of $12,500 to $17,500.
