Stack’s Bower to Sell Incredible PR68 UC 1879 $4 Flowing Hair Stella in June Baltimore Auction

Single Finest Certified for the Issue in Unbelievable NGC Proof-68 Ultra Cameo

IRVINE, Calif. – Stack’s Bowers Galleries is set to auction the finest certified 1879 Flowing Hair Stella in their June auction being held in Baltimore at the end of the month. The $4 Stella has long been a numismatic favorite and the subject of fascination among novice and advanced collectors alike.

Nearly every significant collection of gold coins they have handled has included an example of the famed Stella, and they are delighted to once again offer the coin, especially an example of this caliber.

1879 Four-Dollar Gold Stella. Flowing Hair. NGC PR68 Ultra CameoThe present coin is a truly breathtaking specimen, as close to perfection as we have ever seen in a $4 Stella. Both sides of this piece are essentially pristine, and the surfaces are smooth and inviting with not so much as a single trivial blemish to report.

Sharply to fully defined, the coin’s radiant yellow gold patina and strong Ultra Cameo contrast between softly frosted devices and deeply mirrored fields creates absolutely stunning visual appeal. The combined PCGS and NGC population is just this single coin in this grade, with none finer at either service.

The $4 Stella was one of many proposals made to Congress for an international trade coin, and only one of several that made it to pattern-coin form. Indicative of its intended international nature, the obverse legend of the $4 piece expressed its metallic content in the metric system as follows: 6G, .3S, .7C, 7 GRAMS. Several hundred examples of the 1879 Flowing Hair design by Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber were distributed to congressmen and others of importance to illustrate the concept of the new denomination. While precise mintage figures are unknown, conventional wisdom places the number of examples struck at approximately 415 to 425 coins.

This beautiful coin is set to cross the block on Friday, June 29, as part of the Official Auction of the Whitman Coin and Collectibles Expos in Baltimore, so be sure to be there! This is an opportunity to acquire one of the most famous American rarities in absolutely superb condition. About Stack’s Bowers Galleries

Stack’s Bowers Galleries, a division of Fortune 500 Company Spectrum Group International Inc. (SPGZ.PK), was launched in January 2011, combining the extraordinary histories of Stack’s, the oldest rare coin auction and retail company in America, with Bowers and Merena Auctions, one of the world’s pre-eminent auctioneers of rare coins and paper money. Topping off this amazing numismatic history is the inclusion of the world record for the highest price ever realized at auction for a rare coin, the legendary 1933 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle that realized an astounding $7.59 million (sold in partnership with Sotheby’s). The company is headquartered in Irvine, California, with offices in New York, New Hampshire and Hong Kong. Stack’s Bowers Galleries is the Official Auctioneer for several important numismatic conventions, including the ANA World’s Fair of Money and ANA/PNG Pre-Show auctions, and the Whitman Coin and Collectibles Expos in Baltimore, three times yearly, and also Philadelphia.
